Some tips I've picked up...
Do you want to leverage your networking time to the MAX?! Here's this weeks tips! HINT: I've included my Follow Up Sequence at the end!
Why? Because then it's their social cue to ask... how do you do that? WHY do you do what you do? This is when your Why Story comes in. When people know why you do the things you do, you've leveled up! You're no longer obscure, but clearly understood. Now, when that person thinks of me, they think "strategy", not "marketing guy". Who do you think he reaches out to when he (or someone in his network) needs a good strategy, hmm? :)
2. Don't Ask - Don't Tell
Don't Ask - In conversation, you never want to ask "closed" questions. We've all heard that you should ask open-ended questions to lead the conversation, right? Here's what I do: I literally write, type, or otherwise have prepared a list of 3 open-ended questions. I reuse these 3 with most of the people I encounter. Why? Because it's easy and effective at carrying the convo forward! Simple, yes?
Don't Tell - Here's a tricky one! What if the other person (or people) at the event or conference is asking YOU the dreaded "closed" questions?! Guess what? I don't answer them. I just don't!
Here's the technique I use: "Yes, and..." The "Yes, and..." technique answers their most likely boring question, then gives me a grammatical "out" to talk about something else. Something relevant.
Example: Q - Do you like working for yourself? A - "Yeah! And you know what that allows me to do? Focus on my clients. One of the reasons why I do this is to help create, then implement, a fantastic strategy." See how easy? I'm onto my Why Story and I didn't even have to "go to the bathroom" to get out of the convo! Every interaction counts... if you choose it to.
3. (Wo)Man Up - Follow Up
This is a no-brainer... but we all know that even if it's easy, it doesn't always gets done (looking at that pile of laundry)... ahem...
You've spent the time to increase/improve your network. Now capitalize on it! I have a very specific follow up sequence I use and it's as easy as pie! Mmm... chocolate banana cream pie...

Much like you, I love to network and meet awesome people. We meet TONS of people. And some of us have the unique ability to understand those people at their core. I mean, really understand them.
Some are extroverts, introverts, or (like me) ambiverts. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter which one you are... the important thing to remember is this:
Different is Better than Better.
Huh? What does that even mean, Michael?!?!
It means that if you want to connect with the right people (you know, the ones that care about who you are and what you do), you've got to show them who you are. By simply being yourself, you are sending a clear message. Ultimately, the right message.
Don't try to be Gary Vaynerchuck, or Seth Godin, or Tony Robbins. Be you. It's enough.
If there's one thing we can all agree on, it's that Michael is a genuinely cool guy. Yes, he's still a total goofball, and yes, he's super handsome. And yes, he's writing this description. Point made ;)
